New Investor Advisory Committee Launches

Out with the old, in with the new.

The SEC had independently instituted an Investor Advisory Committee back in the summer of 2009, far in advance of the Dodd-Frank Actís requirement to create one. The Committee met, had a Commission sponsor in Commissioner Luis Aguilar, and had set about the business of assessing investor needs.

That business will be continued by the SECís newly reconstituted Investor Advisory Committee, which debuted last week. The 21-member group includes law professors, asset management executives, representatives of both CalPERS and CalSTERS, and other consumer and investor advocates.

All of the members were nominated by the SECís commissioners, and include:

  • J. Robert Brown, Law Professor at the University of Denver;
  • Joseph Dear, Chief Investment Officer of the California Public Employeesí Retirement System;
  • Barbara Roper, Director of Investor Protection, Consumer Federation of America;
  • Jean Setzfand, Director of Financial Security for the AARP;
  • Mellody Hobson, President and Director of Ariel Investments;
  • Alan Schnitzer, Chief Legal Officer, The Travelers Companies;
  • Damon Silvers, Associate General Counsel for the AFL-CIO;
  • James Glassman, Executive Director of the George W. Bush Institute; and
  • Craig Goettsch, Director of Investor Education and Consumer Outreach, Iowa Insurance Division.
