Khuzami Gets a New Deputy

There’s a new deputy sheriff in town.

George Canellos, head of the SEC’s New York Regional Office (NYRO) since 2009, will be the Division of Enforcement’s new deputy director beginning June 4.

Canellos will take over the position that was vacated by Lorin Reisner back in November. Reisner left the SEC to head the Criminal Division in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office.

Canellos is an experienced criminal litigator and former federal prosecutor who has held public positions in the U.S. Attorney’s office such as Chief of the Major Crimes Unit, Senior Trial Counsel of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force, and Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney.

Enforcement director Robert Khuzami praised Canellos’s "keen and uniquely probing intellect," his innovative problem-solving, and "deep commitment to prosecuting wrongdoers and protecting the public."

Andrew Calamari, currently the NYRO’s senior associate regional director and co-head of enforcement, will become NYRO’s acting director when Canellos assumes his new responsibilities in June, pending appointment of a permanent director.
